Getting started with your BitBox

← Back to all wallets

Own a BitBox? Open your model below. We explain how to confirm it is authentic, where to download the BitBoxApp, where the manufacturer's own manual lives and how to manage the backup, device password and firmware updates.

Never share your recovery phraseNobody at cryptomaan, BTC Direct or BitBox will ever request it, whether by email, phone or chat. And don't enter it when a site or app prompts you for it. Store the microSD card with your backup somewhere safe as well.
Download the BitBoxApp from bitbox.swiss/start onlyAvoid finding the app through a search engine or an advert, as counterfeit apps that steal recovery phrases can appear there.

BitBox02 Nova

1Verify first

How to tell if your BitBox02 Nova is the real thing
  1. Make sure the clear vacuum bag with its grey pattern is intact along all four sealed edges.
  2. Plug in the device: the BitBoxApp runs the Attestation Check automatically before you unlock it.
  3. If a warning appears, stop and reach out to BitBox support.
Packaging seal
Yes, the device comes in a clear, vacuum-sealed bag with a grey pattern along all four edges
In the box
1 BitBox02 Nova, 1 microSD card, 1 USB-C extension cable, 1 USB-A to USB-C adapter, 1 USB-C to Lightning adapter, rubber pulls, stickers

2Getting started

Only download the software frombitbox.swiss/start
App
BitBoxApp (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and iPadOS)
Need a phone or computer?
Yes, setup runs through the BitBoxApp on a computer, Android device, iPhone or iPad
Phone
Android 9+ (via USB-C), iOS 16+ and iPadOS 16+ (via Bluetooth)
Computer
Windows 10+, macOS 12+, Linux (x86_64)

3Backup and access

Backup
Backup on the included microSD card (not encrypted by default); optionally write down the recovery words (24 words by default, BIP39; 12 words is also possible)
PIN code
Device password instead of a PIN code, entered on the device itself; after 10 failed attempts the device resets and you have to restore from the backup. On the Nova, a hardware counter enforces that limit of 10 attempts
Passphrase
Yes, optional passphrase of up to 149 characters (standard ASCII characters); enable it in the BitBoxApp (Settings > Manage device > Expert settings > Passphrase) and enter it on the device
Recovering in another wallet
Yes, the recovery words follow BIP39 and can be restored on another hardware wallet that supports BIP39
Restoring, or forgot your code?

4Keeping it current

Action neededUse the BitBoxApp to confirm your firmware is 9.26.5 or newer, and update if it isn't. That release resolves the issues BitBox disclosed in August 2026. No exploitation has been reported.
Updating firmware
Through the BitBoxApp (Settings > Manage device > Firmware); the firmware is bundled with the app and an update does not change which coins are supported
